This Sunday the 9-0 Packers will be defending their unblemished record against the 4-5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team that has some big wins and some crushing defeats.

One of those bad losses was last week to Houston, where they fell 37-9, so the Bucs will be hoping to bounce back on Sunday by upsetting the Packers.

The Packers are favored to win this game by a large margin, but an upset isn’t out of the question.

The Bucs pulled off a huge upset last time they played, when the 0-9 Bucs defeated the Packers, 38-28, in 2009. The Packers need to hope that this game goes better than that one did, which was, in many ways, an all-around disaster.

Here are five big questions surrounding the Packers’ Sunday matchup against their former division rival, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

At a forum in London on Saturday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have expressed interest in playing an annual “home’’ game overseas.

The Bucs are scheduled to “host’’ the Chicago Bears on Sunday at Wembley Stadium. The team previously played in London in 2009. When announcing the passage of a resolution to continue games in London through 2016, league officials said teams will be allowed to volunteer for one game a year in London and also implied they’d like a team to make repeat visits to help create a fan base in the United Kingdom.

The Bucs will become the first team to play in London twice in the regular season with Sunday’s game and it sounds like there’s a good chance they’ll be back.

“I think they recognize that the growth of the league is important and they’ve been leaders in this area,’’ Goodell said. “I think they want to see the Bucs become a global franchise and I think that’s a great thing for Tampa and a great thing for the NFL.’’

The league has talked about eventually basing a team in London on a permanent basis. Tampa Bay’s willingness to play in London and the fact the team’s owners (the Glazer family) also own the Manchester United soccer team have led to speculation that the Bucs could be a candidate for relocation.

But general manager Mark Dominik said earlier this week the Bucs aren’t looking to leave Tampa Bay. I know there are conspiracy theories out there and many point to the team’s struggles to sell out games in Tampa.

But I don’t think Dominik was throwing out a smoke screen. Raymond James Stadium is one of the best facilities in the league and the NFL likes having Tampa Bay as a Super Bowl venue. When there was talk of the Bucs leaving in the mid-1990s, the league did its best to make sure that didn’t happen. The Glazers have a lot invested in Tampa Bay. They built One Buccaneer Place with their own money.

Team officials have pointed to the economy for the attendance issues. They’ve also said that playing one game in London helps make season tickets more affordable in the short term. Team officials also have said they believe attendance will pick up if the economy improves.

Earlier this week, Sports Business Journal broke the story that the NFL was starting a venture capital fund, with the owners willing to put in at least $32 million to invest in businesses. I knew I needed to comment on this, but, to be honest, I didn’t think I was the most qualified.

For that, I went to Dan Shanoff of Quickish, a media company focused on short-form, real-time news curation and discovery.

Here is what Dan has written up for Sports Biz:

When news broke that the NFL was setting up its own early-stage VC fund, I tweeted out that it was “fascinating, forward-thinking and savvy.” I have been working in and around digital start-ups for 15 years, most recently spending the last two in the heart of New York City’s Silicon Alley founding and launching Quickish, a media company initially focused on sports, including the NFL. This has given me unique, on-the-ground perspective of the ecosystem of investors, entrepreneurs and institutions that the NFL is joining.

So let’s unpack that tweet:

“Fascinating”: That the NFL would recognize the value of not just investing in its game, but surging up the value chain to where early-stage companies are creating and cultivating the new technologies and techniques and talent that will drive the NFL’s business years from now. It isn’t unprecedented for non-traditional companies to create VC units: In the NFL’s New York backyard, AOL
AOL

loading…
Quote | Chart | News | Profile
[AOL Loading... () ] has had great success with its in-house VC “Ventures” group; across the country, Google Ventures
GOOG

loading…
Quote | Chart | News | Profile
[GOOG Loading... () ] has parlayed the company’s dominant position into inserting itself into Silicon Valley’s (and Alley’s) early-stage environment. These are interesting analogues for the NFL. (More literally, it is easy to think of early-stage investment in the same way that teams deploy draft picks — some hit big, some become merely useful, some are wasted. But the best teams have a phenomenal system for product incubation, from college scouting to player development.)

“Forward-thinking”: At least in terms of barriers to entry, there has never been a better moment to found a start-up, and plenty of smart folks are trying. That’s not to say that many of these start-ups are businesses, let alone companies. But the experimentation alone is phenomenal: The process of founding a company, having a vision, launching (and iterating) and, ultimately, serving consumers pays off whether the founding team flies, flops or finds itself acquired by a larger company. By joining the start-up ecosystem in its earliest stages, the league gives itself years of a head-start in figuring out how and why — or even if — a start-up company or trend or talent might have a big impact on the NFL’s business. (Look no further than the same industry: MLB’s Advanced Media group has spent the last decade building out a business that is even more about being a profitable and powerful technology platform than it is about baseball.)

“Savvy”: The NFL is a powerful investor for any early-stage company. The league’s access to tens of millions of fans — let alone the relationship it has with sponsors and media companies, worth well into the billions of dollars — gives it a unique ability to accelerate the companies it invests in. With its market power, combined with the product- and networking-expertise of its co-investors among the more traditional funds, the NFL can create winners and do it efficiently. Meanwhile, the league nimbly gets to experiment with early-stage products that may ultimately turn out to be substantial drivers for its own business, and that’s in addition to any direct return on invested capital. Beyond that, inserting itself into the start-up ecosystem of Silicons Valley and Alley (and elsewhere), the league will have a built-in early-detection system for interesting companies and embryonic trends — the kind of thing a billion-dollar business doesn’t want to recognize when the NFL commissioner goes home and his kids tell him about some new product that is trickling into mainstream consciousness.

Head coach set to lead the Warriors for record 394th time

Denny Douds will walk into Eiler-Martin Stadium on Saturday just as he has done on so many other Saturday afternoons over the course of his 38-year career at East Stroudsburg.

Only this time, history will be walking alongside the veteran coach. Douds will be on the sidelines coaching the 394th game of his career, the most by any coach in NCAA Division II history.

Funny thing is, Douds, who began as an assistant at ESU in 1966, had no idea he was flirting with the record until someone brought it up to him earlier this month.

“I didn’t even know it until about 10 days ago,” Douds said. “It just means I am an old guy. It’s an honor but I’m not too worried about records. I am focused on preparing my team to win a football game against Millersville this week. That is my main concern.”

ESU is currently 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. It’s a rare difficult season for Douds, who took over as the head coach here in 1974. In that remarkable stretch of time, he has won 230 games and has led the Warriors to nine PSAC championshps and four trips to the DII playoffs.

But it’s not the wins, the championships or the postseason berths that define Douds as a coach, and more importantly, as a person.

In the mind of offensive coordinator Mike Terwilliger, it’s all about the impact Douds has had on his life and the lives of so many others.

Terwilliger has been at ESU for the last 38 years. He started out as quarterback for the Warriors and remained on staff after graduation. His son, Jimmy, won the 2005 Harlon Hill Trophy, which is awarded to the best player in D-II football.

“Coach Douds has tremendous values and he has been able to deal with people from all walks of life in a positive way,” Mike Terwilliger said. “His influence on others has been amazing, and I’ve been fortunate to be around him for such a long time. His longevity in this game is impressive and he still has the same competitive fire today that he had in 1974.”

Douds turned 70 in January, but being a year older has not slowed him down. He still gets out of bed in the morning excited about going to work. And as long as he continues to feel that way, he won’t walk away from the game he loves anytime soon.

Age really is just a number to Douds.

“I love what I do, and I enjoy the opportunity to work with people and work in a highly competitive atmosphere,” Douds said. “I also enjoy the challenges of the job. You put in the work every week to be successful, and you believe that if you prepare the right way, you will succeed. But you never know what is going to pop up. There is always a challenge. It makes football more exciting.”

While the challenges change from year to year, the approach Douds takes to coaching has stayed the same.

“The most important part of a football program is the people who are in it,” Douds said. “I have a very simple way of dealing with people. I look at my players and expect the same things out of them as I would expect from my own kids. I want my players to be accountable for their actions on and off the field and be the best they can possibly be in life.”

All someone has to do is look at what Douds has done in his career to see he has accomplished that goal.

In his career, Douds has coached 337 All-PSAC selections, 23 AP Little All-America selections, five American Football Coaches Association selections and five Harlon Hill finalists.

There is no question that his players have excelled off the field as well. Douds has coached six academic All-Americans and 18 academic all-district selections.

“He has so much passion for what he does, and it shows in the success his players have had on the field and in life,” Terwilliger said. He is a great family man, and he truly does run his program like a family. He cares about the players and he wants the best for all of them. He is a special coach and a special person.”

To understand the influence Douds has had on the lives of others, consider the impact the legendary coach has had on all three of Terwilliger’s children.

His oldest daughter is an assistant coach on the Ohio field hockey team. His other daughter is still in school at ESU, but also coaches junior high basketball.

Terwilliger said the success of his children is due, in part, to the impact Douds had on their lives.

“It shows you how powerful his influence is, even to people outside the football program,” Terwilliger said. “My kids were very lucky they had a chance to be around him. He truly made a difference in their lives just as he made a difference in mine.”

As Douds prepared to wrap up his phone interview on Monday, he brought up a story about one of his friends who climbed Mount Everest. He said it made him think about how you just have to go out and find a way to get something done, regardless of how challenging it is.

Douds has certainly done a lot in his life, and while the opportunity to break an NCAA record on Saturday is one more accomplishment on a list full of them, the long-time coach didn’t seem too overwhelmed about his looming date with history.

“I’ll probably look back one day and think about the record and the lives I‘ve been able to have an impact on, but right now the most important thing to me is coaching our next game. Once the ball is kicked off, it will feel like just another game.”

The walk Douds will take with history into the stadium, however, will be a reminder that the PSAC encounter with Millersville is indeed more than just another game.

If it’s true that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, then there are plenty of gems suddenly available on the free-agent market.

Teams have started shedding veterans due to the salary cap considerations and declining performance, but that doesn’t mean those graybeards can’t provide a new team with a surprising boost.

Let’s take a look at a handful of discarded veterans with the ability to make an impact in new locations:

Marion Barber, RB

Why didn’t it work out in Dallas? Barber’s significant drop in production last season led the Cowboys to look elsewhere for a No. 1 runner. He finished 2010 with only 374 rushing yards and averaged a paltry 3.3 yards per carry. He only scored four touchdowns after averaging eight scores a year for the first five seasons of his career.

Where will he land next? Reuniting with ex-Cowboys assistant Tony Sparano in Miami would be an ideal fit for the seventh-year pro. He is a versatile player capable of grinding between the tackles, while also serving as a viable option in the passing game. He also excels in pass protection, which would allow rookie Daniel Thomas to focus on early-down responsibilities. This would be an invaluable asset for an offense looking to bounce back from a dismal performance a year ago.
